Rewarding student sustainability with tree planting: IU and Impact Hero

IU International University of Applied Sciences (IU), in collaboration with Impact Hero, is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability by offering students the option to select digital study materials over printed ones, and by planting trees.

Most of our students study remotely and can choose between receiving printed scripts or exclusively using digital versions. Opting for digital materials results in IU donating to Impact Hero's "Grow My Tree" project, planting one tree for every 20 study scripts.

Alex Čaičics, Head of Sustainability and ESG Communications at IU Group, commented:

"This ongoing initiative underscores IU's commitment to promoting sustainable choices. As one of the first higher education providers in Germany and Europe to calculate and offset our carbon footprint, we recognise that distance education produces at least seven times less greenhouse gas per student than traditional campus-based education. We aim to go beyond this by enabling our students to contribute even further to the decarbonisation of their educational journey."

Since 2023, IU has planted over 25,000 trees in partnership with Impact Hero. IU remains dedicated to continuously enhancing its sustainability practices, striving to make education more eco-friendly and accessible.
