Tourism and sustainability at COP29: IU's Willy Legrand interviews UN Tourism Executive Director

As the world prepares for COP29 this November, Willy Legrand, a professor at IU International University of Applied Sciences and renowned expert in Tourism and Hospitality Management, conducted an interview with Zoritsa Urosevic, exploring the inaugural UN Climate Change Thematic Day dedicated to Tourism.

This event is a landmark moment, marking the first time tourism receives focused attention at a UN climate change conference. During the conversation, Willy Legrand delved into the concept of a science-based economy in tourism, advocating for the integration of scientific research and data-driven strategies to enhance sustainability in tourism planning.

The discussion also highlighted the collaborative initiative between UN Tourism and the University of Oxford SDG Impact Lab to develop the first global, standardised Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Framework for Tourism Businesses. This Framework is crucial to UN Tourism’s mission of decoupling tourism growth from its environmental and social impacts, ensuring a sustainable future for the entire sector.

The 30-minute interview underscores the vital role that tourism plays in advancing the global sustainability agenda, especially as the world gears up for significant international environmental discussions. We at IU are proud to support Professor Legrand as he contributes to these critical global conversations.
