IU among leaders in academic staff gender diversity, study shows

IU International University of Applied Sciences (IU) has emerged as one of the frontrunners in promoting gender diversity among university professors in Germany in a recent analysis conducted by the Berlin/Brandenburg Consumer Protection Association (VSVBB). This study, which examined 50 major German universities and colleges, sheds light on the status of women in academia.

IU has secured the second position with 38.9% of its professoriate being female, marking a significant stride in fostering gender diversity within its academic staff. This achievement underscores IU's commitment to creating a balanced academic environment and setting a powerful example for female students.

The study also reveals a broader picture: Across all institutions surveyed, the average proportion of female professors stands at 27.94%. This highlights the ongoing challenge of achieving gender parity in academic roles.

Besides that, IU distinguishes itself as the only German higher education institution where more faculties are led by women than by men. At IU, 55.56% of heads of faculty are female, significantly surpassing the average rate of 20.52% across all assessed universities.

The study identifies positive trends in junior faculty appointments, with 20 out of 37 universities achieving gender parity in these roles. These findings emphasize the necessity of continued efforts to promote gender equality within the academic community and to provide strong role models for aspiring female scholars.
