IU Group publishes its annual Sustainability and Social Impact Report

IU Group is pleased to publish its annual Sustainability and Social Impact Report, an important milestone document reviewing the organisation’s activities from the perspective of Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) performance.

Across the Group, our mission is to empower learners by democratising access to higher education. Social impact is central to our strategy: we see education as a key lever to address societal challenges, with long-term solutions depending on widening access to learning and qualifications.

As one of the largest higher education providers in Germany by student numbers, IU Group marked its 25th anniversary in 2025. Over this period, we have been among the pioneers of digitalised higher education in Germany. Today, we are advancing the use of artificial intelligence in higher education, both as a tool to support learning and as a core competency for the modern workplace, including through Syntea, our award-winning AI study companion.

The quality and relevance of our study offering is reflected in feedback from key stakeholders. Surveys of students and employers indicate consistently high levels of satisfaction and strong alignment with labour market needs.

The report also highlights the environmental profile of our study model. According to our analysis, our distance learning model generates significantly lower CO₂ emissions per student than those of major peer institutions, indicating that distance learning can represent a more resource-efficient form of higher education.

IU Group is a certified B Corporation, reflecting our commitment to verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

A few initiatives reported in 2025 include:

  • The work of the Research Center for Sustainable Media & Marketing, advancing methodologies to assess the broader societal value of media and marketing;
  • The IU Diversity Award, recognising student research on topics including marginalisation and inclusion, and the IU Alumni Awards, recognising graduates contributing to environmental and social value creation;
  • Continued commitment to equity and inclusion through Germany’s Diversity Charter, alongside the development of a free diversity maturity model for organisations;
  • A partnership with the Study Access Alliance, which supported 1,300 students in 2025 through expanded scholarship access;
  • A partnership with the Association of German Veterans, supporting flexible education pathways for service members transitioning into civilian life;
  • Further progress in cybersecurity, including expanded multi-factor authentication, AI-supported risk analysis and organisation-wide awareness programmes.

Our sustainability approach continues to mature and become more institutionalised. Looking ahead, we are preparing for Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requirements, pursuing B Corp recertification, and advancing a pipeline of initiatives aligned with updated B Corp standards.

The full report provides a detailed overview of our progress, challenges and next steps in sustainability and social impact.
