Accessibility in focus: art exhibition by an IU architecture student in Hamburg

In April and May 2025, IU International University of Applied Sciences (IU) is hosting an impactful exhibition by Edoardo Bianchini, an architecture student at IU, drawing attention to accessibility in design and architecture.

Following a 2023 accident that resulted in his paralysis from the neck down, Bianchini used mouth-painting to create 50 artworks, now showcased at IU's Eimsbüttel campus in Hamburg.

The exhibition features pieces displayed on a construction fence, exploring themes of inclusive architectural solutions. Bianchini's work, connected to his bachelor’s thesis and supported by his book ‘Breaking Barriers. Rethinking Architecture’, examined the constraints of traditional design while proposing accessible alternatives.

Professor Heiner Stengel emphasised the exhibition's role in addressing overlooked accessibility challenges within architectural practice:

“Edoardo's work offers a completely new perspective on architecture-related design and aesthetics. His art makes barriers visible that remain hidden to many.”

IU International University supported Edoardo’s continued education by adapting exams and providing individual solutions post-accident.
